Cover Story: Breastfeeding as a measure to prevent obesity in children and adolescents has produced conflicting results due to differences in study design, ethnicities, confounding factors, and the definition of obesity itself. Additional metabolic indicators were recommended to be combined as outcome variables when exploring the impact of breastfeeding on obesity risk. This original study indicated the benefits of breastfeeding might begin to wane around the age of 12 months, and prolonged breastfeeding might be associated with increased risks of different obesity phenotypes among children and adolescents. However, the increased risks might be largely offset by a favorable lifestyle such as healthy diet, limited screen time, adequate physical activity, and sufficient sleep duration.
