Cover Story: Nodular thyroid disease is very common in the general population. Most nodules are benign with malignancy found in around 10% of cases. The majority of thyroid nodules are detected as incidental findings as a result of greater imaging volumes and the use of modern imaging technologies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of ACR TI-RADS in predicting the cancer risk in thyroid nodules. The analysis involved over 1000 consecutive FNA biopsies in a single Canadian institution over a three-year period. Variables examined included gender, age, history of thyroid cancer or neck irradiation, nodule size and location, TR level, and sonographic features such as punctate echogenic foci (PEF), a very hypoechoic appearance, taller-than-wide shape, and suspected extrathyroidal extension.
